Introduction

In the first part of NCERT Class 6 Maths Chapter 12, you will learn about the basics of Ratio and Proportion. Ratio

If Rita is 10 years old and her father is 30 years old, how many times older is Rita’s father than she is? The clear answer is number 3. The ratio of the father’s age to Rita’s age is another way to look at the question. A ratio is a way to compare two things based on “how many times.” The symbol ‘:.’ is used to show the ratio. 

The Ratio and Proportion 6th class standard is something that students have to learn. Both should have the same number of units. In Class 6, you will learn how to compare the length of a road to that of a highway. But Ratio and Proportion Class 6 says that you can’t compare how long a road is to how heavy an elephant is.

For example, if a pony is about 3 feet tall and a horse is about 7.5 feet tall, then the pony is smaller. A pony is 3 feet tall and a horse is 7.5 feet tall, which is a ratio of 1:2.5. The height of the horse is 2.5 times that of the pony. But you can’t compare how tall a pony is to how heavy a horse is. You need to look at some of the Class 6 Ratio and Proportion Questions.

Proportion

To figure out what proportion is, we need two ratios. We say that two ratios are in proportion if they are the same. So, to describe a proportion, we need four different things. The way to write a ratio is A:B: C:D. People call A and D “extreme terms,” and B and C “middle terms.”

Question 1 – Are 5:40 and 7:56 in proportion?

• Solution: 5:35 = 1:8
• 7:56 = 1:8.
• Therefore, 5:40 and 7:56 proportional.

Question 2 – Are 6:42 and 7:63 in proportion?

• Solution: 6:42 = 1:7
• 7:56 = 1:9
• Therefore, 6:42 and 7:63 are not in proportion.

In some math problems, we may need to find the answer to more than one thing before we can get to the final answer. The unitary method is a step-by-step way to solve a problem in which we find the value of a unit and then figure out the value of all the units together.
