Chapter 4 Heat NCERT Solutions for Class 7 Science – Important Notes
Here are some important things that are talked about in the chapter.
- The temperature of an object is a good way to tell how hot it is. A thermometer is a tool used to measure temperature.
- The thermometer we use to measure our body temperature is called a clinical thermometer.
- A clinical thermometer is a long, thin, uniform tube made of glass. One end of it is a bulb. This bulb has mercury in it. A small, shiny thread of mercury can be seen coming out of the bulb.
- The range of a clinical thermometer is from 35°C to 42°C.
- A person’s normal body temperature is 37°C.
- A laboratory thermometer is used to find out how hot or cold it is. On the glass tube, the temperature scale generally goes from -10°C to 110°C. To read a fraction of temperature, each part of the temperature scale is further broken down into 10 parts.
- Conduction is the process by which heat moves from the warmer part of an object to the cooler part. Most of the time, heat moves through solids by a process called conduction.
- Heat conductors are things that make it easy for heat to move through them. Aluminum, iron, and copper are just a few examples.
- Insulators are things that don’t carry electricity well. Water and air don’t move heat very well.
- Convection or convection of heat is the process of heat moving through a medium because the molecules in the medium are moving.
- Heat doesn’t move well through water and air. But they do get hot, even though they don’t conduct heat well. Convection is the way that heat moves through fluids.
- During the day, the land near the coast warms up faster than the water. As the land gets hotter, the air above it rises. The air from the sea, which is cooler, rushes in to replace it. To finish the cycle, warm air from the land moves towards the sea. Sea breeze is the name for the air that comes from the ocean.
- In coastal areas, houses are built so that their windows face the water and catch the cool sea breeze. At night, it is just the opposite. The water takes longer than the land to cool down. So, the cool air from the land moves towards the sea. The land breeze is the name for this.
- Radiation is another way that heat from the sun gets to us. Radiation doesn’t need a medium to move heat from one place to another.
- We like to wear light-colored clothes in the summer and dark-colored clothes in the winter. In the winter, we feel warmer when we wear dark-colored clothes because dark surfaces absorb more heat.
- In the winter, we wear clothes made of wool. Wool doesn’t move heat very well. Also, there are pockets of air between the wool fibres. This air stops heat from leaving our bodies and going into the cold air around us. So, we feel warm.
