  • In 1949, there were just 12 members: Belgium, Denmark, Canada, France, Italy, Iceland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom (United Kingdom), and the United States (United States).
  • In 1952, Greece and Turkey joined the alliance.
  • West Germany entered the territory in 1955.
  • In 1982, Spain joined the association.
  • In 1997, the organization welcomed Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Poland as new members. In 2004, one year after NATO assumed command of the United Nations-mandated International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), seven nations joined: Estonia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovenia, and Slovakia.
  • In 2009, Albania and Croatia became members.
