Origins of MPEG
In January 1988, Leonardo Chiariglione and Hiroshi Yasuda founded MPEG. In May 1988, the first conference was held in Ottawa, Canada. Several released versions of MPEG are detailed below.
- MPEG-1 Edition
- MPEG-2 Edition
- MPEG-4 Edition
- MPEG-7 Edition
- MPEG-21 Edition, etc.
Working principles of MPEG
MPEG uses a technique that compresses data into tiny bits so that it may be swiftly sent, decompressed, and encoded using discrete cosine transform. MPEG’s compression rate is high because it does not retain the entire frame; just the altered structures are stored. MPEG’s capabilities include:
- Compact Disc storage of audio data (CD)
- Videos storage on digital videotapes
MPEG Benefits
- MPEG documents generate a copy of the original data that is of pretty high quality.
- The MPEG document application is compatible with multiple web browsers and is usable on multiple devices.
MPEG Restrictions
- Less compression ratio.
- The file sizes are significantly larger.
- The lengthy loading time is due to the big file size.
