Origins of IBM
- On 16 June 1911, Charles Ranlett Flint formed The Company as CTR (Computing Tabulating Recording Company). It resulted from the merger of three companies: Tabulating Machine Company, International Time Recording Company, and Computing Scale Company.
- In 1924, the name CTR was changed to IBM.
- IBM introduced its first mass-produced computer, the IBM 701 defense calculator, in the 1950s. It was an electronic device intended for widespread application.
- IBM created the programming language FORTRAN in 1957.
- In 1933, IBM purchases the patents, tools, and production facilities of Rochester, New York-based Electromatic Typewriters, Inc.
