Origins of GIF
CompuServe introduced GIF on June 15, 1987, to provide their file download zone with a color image format, replacing their previous black-and-white RLE (Run-Length Encoding) format. The initial version of GIF was referred as 87a. CompuServe published version 89a in 1989, which included translucent backdrop colors for animation delays and application-specific metadata storage.
Using GIF
- GIFs are appropriate for line art with crisp edges and a limited amount of colors, such as logos. It makes use of the format’s lossless compression, favoring large surfaces with well-defined edges and consistent color.
- GIFs can be used to store low-color sprite information in video games.
- GIFs can be used for tiny animations and low-resolution video snippets.
