In computers, DPI is a measurement of the touchscreen display’s resolution. In printing, it is an indicator of the quality of the printed image on the paper or the printer’s resolution, signifying the number of ink dots that can be placed in one square inch by a printer. More dots per centimeter indicate a higher resolution.

DPI Full Form
  • DPI is often used to determine the quality of digital image printing and to demonstrate the quality of the printer.
  • The resolution of an image is determined by the number of different colored dots that can fit within a one-inch square.
  • Thus, the printer or scanner’s resolution is measured in dots per inch.
  • A printer with a resolution of 400, for instance, contains 400 dots both vertically and horizontally.
  • If there are more dots per inch, the space between them will be smaller. Therefore, color droplets can be successfully blended to produce images of excellent quality.
  • For a printer’s printed dots to form an image, they must be close enough.
  • The closer they are, the sharper the image, thus if you want to print images that are crisp and clear, the DPI should be high.
