The basics of how DNS works

DNS is important because, while domain names are easy for people, computers, and devices to remember, IP addresses are what is used to get to sites. With the help of DNS servers, work is done in DNS. When a domain name is typed into a web browser, the request is sent to the DNS server. A lookup table is used by the DNS server to figure out the IP address. Then, it sends the information through real servers to the web browser of the user.

At the Central Registry, information from all of the domain servers on the internet is collected and kept. Host companies and service providers talk to the Central Registry all the time to get updated DNS information. When you type in a web address, your Internet Service Provider will look at the DNS associated with the domain name, turn it into a machine-friendly IP address, and send your Internet connection to the right website. When you register a new domain name or change the DNS servers on your domain name, it usually takes between 12 and 36 hours for the domain name servers around the world to be updated and able to get the information. Propagation is the name for these 36 hours.

DNS has many important parts

  • DNS has been successful because it has a lot of features, some of which are
  • A DNS is made up of many different databases.
  • There are also reserved lists of data in the DNS database.
  • The DNS server is easy to use and has great features. A lot of DNS needs to be controlled through the user interface.

Advantages

  • The users get important messages even when the system is down.
  • With Anycast technology, when there is maintenance or downtime, the requests are answered by the node that is closest to the user.
  • DNS fixes the mistakes right away.

Disadvantages

  • ICANN can control the DNS root registry, which is a private non-profit organization with ties to a certain country that makes the idea of network neutrality difficult to understand.
  • DNS servers have decided that if DNS goes down, it would destroy the World Wide Web (WWW), even if there are more than one root server and backup servers. This will cause a lot of damage in different places.
