What is the full form of CLAT?

The CLAT full form is the Common Law Admission Test. CLAT is a consolidated national-level entrance exam administered by the Indian government for admission to 22 national law schools. The majority of self-funded and private law schools in India utilize these scores for admittance. Legal posts are also filled using CLAT Postgraduate scores at Coal India, ONGC, BHEL, the Indian Steel Authority, Oil India, etc. The examination is administered in law schools following the 12th grade or the Higher Secondary Examination for admission to integrated U.G. programs and following graduation in law LLM (Law for Master of Laws) programs.

Eligibility Standards

  • Candidates must be Indian citizens or NRIs to take the exam.
  • Foreign nationals who intend to enroll in any program at one of the partner Law Universities may directly approach the College, which has a number of available seats for international students.
  • For the U.G. course, a Senior Secondary School or Intermediate (12th) diploma or its equivalent from a recognized board with a minimum aggregate score of 45 percent is required. In contrast, S.C. and S.T. applicants have cumulative marks that exceed 40%.
  • There is no age cap for the examination.
  • For a P.G. course B.L. or LLB University degree or an equivalent degree from a recognized University with an aggregate mark of at least 55%, whereas for SC and ST candidates the aggregate score is 50%.
  • Applicants who have passed the qualifying examination through additional and repeat attempts are also eligible to take the examination.

CLAT Exam format

This law school entrance exam lasts 120 minutes. The CLAT examination consists of 150 multiple-choice questions. The CLAT examination paper consists of five sections in which candidates must respond to questions on themes including as

  • Legal GK
  • Current affair
  • Elementary Mathematics is based on Numerical Ability.
  • Legal Aptitude
  • Syllogism
  • English including Comprehension
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Legal Reasoning

Beginning with the CLAT 2020, all questions will focus on paragraphs. Five to six questions will continue from one paragraph. The breakdown of the total score is provided below.

  • English – 30 marks
  • G.K. questions – 37 marks
  • Mathematics -15 marks
  • Logical Reasoning – 30 marks
  • Legal Aptitude – 38 marks

For each correct response, applicants receive one mark, and 0.25 points are subtracted from their overall score for each incorrect response.
