What is the full form of BMI?
The BMI full form is Body Mass Index. It is a method of measurement used to categorize persons into the following groups: obese, overweight, normal weight, and underweight. It is the ratio between your weight in kilograms and the square of your height in meters (meters). People with a high BMI have significantly more body fat or weight relative to their height.

The calculation method for BMI
Two criteria are required to calculate the BMI: a person’s height in meters and weight in kilograms. If the height is supplied in inches, the weight should be given in pounds. The BMI calculation formula is as follows:
- If the individual’s height and weight are supplied in inches and pounds, the BMI can be computed using the following formula.
BMI = Weight (in pounds)/Height (In inches)2 ✕ 703
Where 703 is a conversion factor.
- If a person’s height and weight are supplied in meters and kilograms, the BMI can be computed using the following formula.
BMI = Weight (kg)/Height (m)2
Importance of BMI
- In the 1830s, Belgian mathematician Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet created the BMI. It is occasionally called the Quetelet index.
- BMI provides an approximation of your general health and risk of acquiring chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, and gallstones, among others.
- A very muscular individual with no health risks can have a high BMI.
Values of BMI
When measuring BMI using the above-mentioned formula, BMI can be categorized into various groups based on the value obtained.
- If the value of BMI is less than 18.5, then the person falls under the underweight category.
- If the value of BMI is between 18.5 to 24.9, then the person falls under the normal category.
- If the value of BMI is between 25 to 29.9, then the person falls under the overweight category.
- If the value of BMI is between 30 to 34.9, then the person falls under the obesity category.
- If the value of BMI is between 35 to 39.9, then the person falls under the severely obese category.
- If the value of BMI is more than 40, then the person falls under the morbid obesity category.
Example
For example, if we have a person who is 2.0 meters tall and weighs 90 kilograms, we may use the BMI Calculator to get their body mass index.
BMI = 90 kg /(2)2
BMI = 22.5
The value of BMI falls under the normal value.
