BMD Full Form

What is the full form of BMD?

The BMD full form is Bone Mineral Density. It leads to an X-ray examination that measures the mineral density of your bones. It reveals how many grams (g) of calcium and other minerals are packaged per unit of bone volume. This test determines the health and strength of your bones. The test is typically administered to individuals at risk for mild and severe bone loss.

Method of performing BMD

It is a non-invasive, painless, and prescription-free technique. It involves minimal radiation exposure, and you must lie on a table or bench throughout the examination. There appear to be two types of bone density scans.

Central DXA

In this type of scan, an X-ray scanner scans the hip, spine, and other bones of the torso.

Peripheral DXA

In this sort of X-ray examination, the forearm, finger, wrist, or heel bones are scanned.

Why is the BMD examination carried out?

The BMD test is used to determine the

  • Loss of bone mineral density preceding a bone fracture.
  • Evaluation of Osteoporosis (Severe bone loss).
  • The management of osteoporosis therapy.

When does the doctor suggest the BMD test?

The BMD test is prescribed by a physician as a preventative bone density clinical diagnosis when the following conditions are met:

  • X-ray evidence of bone loss in the spine
  • Back pain in the spine with a likely fracture or bone loss.
  • In a single year, the height declines by half an inch or more.
  • Long-term use of steroids, which can decrease bone density
  • The bone-rebuilding process can be altered by anti-rejection medicines following an organ or bone marrow transplant.
  • Postmenopausal women who are at least 50 years old.
  • Most women older than 65 are more susceptible to injury.
