What is the full form of BCG?

The BCG full form is the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin. It is a tuberculosis vaccination; it helps to increase tuberculosis resistance. Two French bacteriologists, Albert Calmette and Camille Guerin created the vaccine. Dr. Weil-Hale used it for the first time to treat a kid with tuberculosis in 1921. Up to 1924, around 320 infants were immunized with BCG throughout the subsequent three years.

Vaccination is administered to children and persons at increased risk of getting tuberculosis, such as those living in TB-infested regions of the world, children with one or both parents infected with TB, and those born in TB-affected nations. It is also awarded to those with bladder tumors or bladder cancer.

How does BCG perform?

  • The Vaccination is a weakened strain of the tuberculosis-causing bacteria Mycobacterium Bovis.
  • When injected into the body, the vaccine stimulates the immune system in response to the bacterium without actually causing the infection.
  • Antibodies remain in the body, protecting against subsequent bacterial infections.
  • Thus, the vaccination enables the body to produce antibodies against the TB bacterium, which confers immunity to tuberculosis.

Care and safety for BCG

  • The vaccination must be provided following an appointment with a physician.
  • For approximately 24 hours, keep the vaccination region clean and dry.
  • If the vaccine site begins to ooze, a dry bandage, such as gauze, should be used.
  • If necessary, a sterile alcohol swab can be used to clean the area.
  • Do not apply any salve, bandage, antiseptic cream, etc.

  • Prior to an individual’s TB
  • If an individual has an HIV infection
  • Have a positive result for Mantoux
  • Due to an underlying ailment, have compromised immune systems.
  • Women who are pregnant.
