History of BARC

  • Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha initiated the nuclear program in India. In 1945, he established the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) for nuclear science research.
  • Dr. Bhabha founded AEET (Atomic Energy Establishment, Trombay) in January 1954 in order to strengthen nuclear facilities and utilize nuclear energy for the nation’s development.
  • Dr. Bhabha has established multiple BARC training sites to address the energy demands of atomic energy research and development activities.
  • AEET was renamed BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Center) in 1966, following the passing of Dr. Bhabha on 22 January 1967.
  • The nuclear research programs were preceded by the BARC’s expertise in an effort to make India energy independent.
