History of RAW
- The ineffectiveness of the Intelligence office in the battles against China in 1962 and Pakistan in 1965 was the most important factor in the formation of RAW.
- In September 1968, RAW was created under the direction of Rameshwar Nath Kao.
- RAW began as a division of the chief intelligence service with 250 employees and a budget of approximately 20 million dollars per year.
- In the early 1970s, RAW’s annual budget had risen to approximately $300 million, and its staff and workforce numbered in the thousands.
- In 1971, Kao convinced the government to create the Aviation Research Center (ARC).
- Between 1970 and 1990, RAW was introduced to the Radio Research Center and the Electronics & Technology facilities.
- Until now, the Indian government supplemented another signal intelligence service known as the National Technical Facilities Organization (NTFO) in 2004, which has since been renamed NTRO.
- The JIC (Joint Intelligence Committee) is responsible for bridging, evaluating, and reviewing intelligence activities between RAW, the Intelligence agency, and the Defense Intelligence Agency as part of the Cabinet Secretariat (DIA).
