The BHEL full form is Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited. BHEL is a government-owned manufacturing and engineering company situated in New Delhi, India. It is formed and controlled by the Indian government. It was founded in 1964 and is the oldest and largest manufacturer of power plants in India.
In addition to power plant service, BHEL is involved in engineering, production, building, servicing, and evaluation of a variety of products from key economic sectors such as transportation (Railways), energy, water, oil and gas, defense & aerospace, and transmission.

A brief history of BHEL
- In 1964, BHEL was founded in India’s Indigenous Heavy Equipment Industry. Heavy Electricals Limited amalgamated with BHEL in 1974. In 1991, BHEL was converted into a limited public enterprise.
- It has developed the capacity to manufacture a vast array of electrical, electronic, and mechanical equipment for all industries, including transmission, transportation, oil, and gas, among others.
- However, the company generates the majority of its revenue from the sale of power plants such as boilers, generators, etc.
- As of 2017, BHEL-supplied equipment generated approximately 55 percent of India’s total energy-producing capacity.
- The corporation also supplied Indian Railways with tens of thousands of electric locomotives and defense equipment, such as the Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) naval weapons manufactured for the Indian Army in partnership with the Indian Ordnance Factories and Defence Simulators.
