Tim David was replaced as MI’s Impact Player by Kartikeya Singh.
Rahane and Ruturaj’s 82-run partnership was finally broken by Piyush Chawla, who caught the dangerous Rahane at long on for 61 runs (27).
Ruturaj and Shivam Dube continued the pace by taking small risks to keep the scoreboard moving. Shokeen’s four off Dube and Ruturaj’s six off Shokeen reduced the necessary rate to below six when 46 were needed off of 42.
As soon as Dube pulled one onto the stumps in the 15th over, Kartikeya broke the 39-run stand. Impact player for CSK Ambati Rayudu entered the batting order at No. 5 in place of the hurt Deepak Chahar.
Together, Rayudu and Ruturaj completed the match with 11 balls remaining.
After 40 from 36 balls, Ruturaj was still unbeaten, and Rayudu was still alive at 20 off 16 balls.
Previously, Mahendra Dhoni, the captain of the Chennai Super Kings, chose to bowl after winning the toss. Ben Stokes (injury), Moeen Ali (illness), Ambati Rayudu, and Rajvardhan Hangargekar were replaced by Dwayne Pretorius, Sisanda Magala, Tushar Deshpande, and Ajinkya Rahane. As their replacements, they designated Ambat Rayudu, Shaik Rasheed, Rajvardhan Hangargekar, Akash Singh, and Subhranshu Senapati.
Jofra Archer (Precautionary measure) and Nehal Wadhera were replaced by Jason Behrendorff and Tristan Stubbs, respectively, for the Mumbai Indians. As stand-ins, they designated Sandeep Warrier, Kartikeya Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Arjun Tendulkar, and Nehal Wadhera.
Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan followed the aggressive path right away, giving MI’s openers a great start. In the first over, Rohit blasted a few lofted fours off Deepak Chahar. The next opponent was Sisanda Magala, who was welcomed by Kishan with three fours in the over. In the fourth over of Tushar Deshpande’s bowling, Rohit blasted the first six runs of the innings. Five balls later, the CSK bowler recovered and cleaned out Rohit with a stunning delivery. Kishan continued to play his strokes despite being dismissed, going after Magala once more and hitting him for two fours to bring the Powerplay total to 14 off the last over. In the first six overs, MI scored 61.
Dhoni added spin to the assault, which caused it to backfire. In his opening over, Ravindra Jadeja scored, catching the dangerous Kishan at long on. In the following over, Suryakumar Yadav was caught behind off Mitchell Santner thanks to a great take and review from MS Dhoni. When Dhoni made a superb catch down the leg side and Suryakumar gloved his sweep, the umpire refused to budge on the appeal. It was established by replays and Dhoni’s review that the batter had gloved it.
Santner struck again in the following over to trap Arshad Khan LBW and reduce MI to 76/5, and Jadeja added another wicket to make it three for CSK in two overs with a wonderful reflex catch off his own bowling.
For the following two overs, the action slowed down. Tilak Varma attempted to boost the ante by hitting Jadeja for a six, but the CSK all-rounder fought back fiercely, trapping Varma LBW off the following ball. Notwithstanding the batter’s review, replays revealed three reds. Jadeja altered the game’s trajectory and finished with a score of 4-0-20-3.
Dwayne Pretorius and Ruturaj Gaikwad worked together to wonderfully catch Tristan Stubbs at the long on fence as CSK continued to exert pressure and maintain their stranglehold.
Tim David then gave the innings some momentum by hitting two sixes and a four off Deshpande, but the bowler quickly responded and caught Tim David at deep mid-wicket with the ensuing delivery.
In order to propel MI to 157/8 from 20 overs, Hrithik Shokeen (18* off 13) and Piyush Chawla (5* off 6) joined forces and contributed 26 runs off 18 balls.
